Walking on air in the Alentejo
Olive groves, vineyards, ancient terracotta-toned towns... The Alentejo region is Portugal’s answer to Tuscany
Terracotta-tiled farm buildings flashed past as I pushed the whining hire car eastwards. Vines whipped by in long, green regiments. The landscape was the kind you find in those relocation programmes, where couples exchange life in Grimsby for a russet-tiled pile among lemon trees in the continental sunshine. The road ahead was arrow-straight and my wound-down window let in a cool breeze. Only another 30km and I could take my place at a table laden with cheese, olives, crusty bread and cold wine. My foot, I noticed, was pressing the accelerator a little harder…
Whether it’s holiday plans or the big retirement scheme, at some stage we’re all longing for it: that vintage slice of the beautiful south. The classic is Chiantishire, but at regular intervals, some less-visited spot with hills carpeted in olive trees and a reasonably priced wine industry will claim to be ‘the New Tuscany’.
